Happy National Poetry Month! (Still Not an April Fools’ Joke)

Yes, April is National Poetry Month. To celebrate, find one of the thousands of poems from The Poetry Foundation, clip it, put it in your pocket, and pull it out from time to time to memorize it. (More on Poem in Your Pocket Day later this month.)

Since today was Opening Day for our beloved Detroit Tigers  – in 1st place as of this evening (get used to it, AL Central) – a baseball poem seemed appropriate to share. This is the beginning of “Analysis of Baseball” by May Swanson:

It’s about
the ball,
the bat,
and the mitt.
Ball hits
bat, or it
hits mitt.
Bat doesn’t
hit ball, bat
meets it.
Ball bounces
off bat, flies
air, or thuds
ground (dud)
or it
fits mitt.
